Filing: What is a benefit claim?

A claim for unemployment benefits may be filed when a worker loses his/her job through no fault of his/her own, usually due to a layoff. Benefits paid are then charged against the account of the liable employer. This raises the employer’s experience rate.

The benefits paid when working less than full time will be the difference between the claimant′s weekly benefit amount (WBA) and that part of the claimant′s wages for the week that are more than $20 or 20 percent of the WBA, whichever is greater. For more details see "Part-time Work and Partial Benefits"
